BENEO’s Palatinose scales new heights with Malcolm Law

- New Zealand’s charity hero pushes endurance limits by running seven of the mainland’s Great Walks in seven days -

In a challenge that would stretch any body’s endurance limits, 49-year-old Malcolm Law pushed himself to his own limits by achieving a run distancing 360km (223 miles) within seven days. Raising money for the Leukaemia & Blood Foundation in memory of his brother, athlete Malcolm conquered the 7in7 Challenge in New Zealand with the help of BENEO’s PalatinoseTM (isomaltulose). The run is the equivalent of running nine off-road marathons and climbing a 3,700m mountain twice – all in seven consecutive days.

A keen sportsperson with a raft of knowledge of energy-enhancing products, Malcolm Law trialled PalatinoseTM during the challenge and was able to reveal its success at boosting his performance.

Law commented: “I was looking for something I could add to pure water without tainting its flavour, but would give slow-release energy; sports drinks are great but I tend to find that after a few hours of endurance sport I crave fresh water and with PalatinoseTM, I was able to get the refreshment with the extra calories.”

A seasoned distance runner, Malcolm chooses energy-enhancing products to sustain his performance on long runs. New to PalatinoseTM, Malcolm was recommended the functional carbohydrate by Frucor, the leading company for energy drinks in New Zealand and Australia. For the week of the 7in7 Challenge, he used PalatinoseTM every day, mixing it with water.

Speaking about the results, Malcolm said: “PalatinoseTM worked excellently for me. I really valued the slow-release energy effects because it meant that in the middle of a run where I couldn’t take in any solids, my energy levels didn’t drop. It also has a mild sweetness and no flavour, which is great when added to water – I’d absolutely recommend it to anyone!”

Malcolm Law’s case is exemplary of the latest trend in the increased awareness of and demands for energy boosters within the consumer market – whether this is the result of increased product innovation from manufacturers or the change in modern lifestyles to a faster pace is debateable. Either way, noticeable trends have been marked by the likes of Innova² that the average consumer is becoming more conscious about their health and fitness and sports and performance nutrition is now permeating from the professional market to every-day availability.

“We’re seeing that consumers increasingly feel a lack of energy due to longer working hours and less leisure time. As a result, the ‘sports nutrition’ category, which provides for the maintenance or creation of energy is continuing to extend into new segments such as lifestyle products, and Palatinose™ is beneficial to both,” commented Jens Böhm, Commercial Managing Director, BENEO-Palatinit. “PalatinoseTM is still the only fully digestible, low-glycaemic carbohydrate providing a prolonged energy release in the form of glucose. This combination of properties allows us to find significant, positive influences on physiological benefits such as mental performance and physical endurance, making it perfect for challenges such as Malcolm Law’s but also for less active people like you and me.”

Independent sports medicine studies[1] have also shown that Palatinose™ promotes the body’s own fat oxidation. This means that Palatinose™ increases the ratio of energy derived from fat relative to the total amount of required energy while being active and carbohydrate storages are available for longer.  A fact that is not only true for sportspeople but also for less active people. In a study where fat and carbohydrate oxidation after ingestion of a Palatinose™ drink or a high glycaemic maltodextrine drink was investigated in sportspeople, the result was that before, during and after performance, the Palatinose™ group demonstrated an increased rate of fat burning compared to the controlled group.

PalatinoseTM is the only fully digestible, low GI carbohydrate (GI 32) that provides prolonged energy release in the form of glucose while being completely toothfriendly, as approved by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration). Derived from sugar beet, Palatinose™ is a disaccharide; the white, crystalline powder has the same caloric value as sugar and a similar sweetness.
