The BENEO-Group provides forum for
the latest scientific findings to help resolve the obesity crisis

The latest scientific findings on the impact of functional carbohydrates on energy metabolism were presented by international experts at the BENEO-Group’s highly successful first European Scientific Symposium.

Solid scientific research is the basis for all activities within the BENEO-Group, which consists of BENEO-Orafti, BENEO-Palatinit and BENEO-Remy. While this philosophy has already tradition for more than 15 years in each individual company of today’s BENEO-Group, it became a united and powerful main driver when the BENEO-Group was founded in November 2007. The commitment to sound science was expressed already publicly in December 2007 with the symposium “Nutritional Benefits of Prebiotics & Functional Carbohydrates” that was organized by the Faculty of Medicine, National University of Singapore, and sponsored by the BENEO-Group, to share the latest findings in this field.

The European conference that took place in April 2008 in Brussels showed the benefits of providing a united platform for scientific discussions with international experts.

Having in mind the enormous health implications related to obesity and subsequent related illnesses like diabetes and CVD, this symposium intended to discuss physiological properties of some functional carbohydrates that potentially might contribute to a healthier lifestyle.

Chaired by the respected weight management experts Prof. Arne Astrup (Copenhagen, DK) and Prof. John Blundell (Leeds, UK), the Symposium looked at the impact of functional carbohydrates on energy metabolism and the latest research findings on the following subjects were presented:

§         Obesity and body weight management

§         Mechanism and biomarkers of appetite regulation

§         Physiological diversities of carbohydrates

§         Long-term effects of low glycemic carbohydrates in diabetics and overweight subjects

§         Postprandial energy metabolism of low glycemic carbohydrates

§         Health effects of prebiotic fibres

§         Food intake regulation: mechanisms and animal data

§         Appetite and food intake regulation: human data

§         Prebiotics, fibres and body weight management

§         The future for carbohydrates

Matthias Moser, BENEO-Group Board Member and research responsible comments: ”With obesity affecting increasing numbers of adults and children across the globe, a variety of diet and lifestyle solutions must be developed in order to help consumers maintain a healthy weight. From the research presented at the 1st BENEO Scientific Symposium in Brussels, it is clear that functional carbohydrates have an important role to play in a healthy weight managing diet.”

“Characterised by their low glycemic index, high fibre content, satiating effects and their support for normal glycaemia and lipid metabolism, the functional carbohydrates inulin, oligofructose, Palatinose™ and Isomalt presented at this symposium offer a number of health benefits to consumers. A good research base has now been established to quantify the impact of these functional carbohydrates on satiety, metabolic function and appetite control and additional studies have revealed plausible mechanisms for such effects. The BENEO-Group is committed to offering platforms in the future so that the scientific community can discuss and demonstrate the various uses of these functional carbohydrates in healthy weight management clients.”
